5 Obvious (and FREE) Ways to Get Your Home Ready to Sell

We have all heard that staging your home helps to sell it faster, but many can't afford the cost of staging. If your budget's tight, I have five free tips to help you get your home looking it's best!

1.) Remove the Clutter - it is the key to creating an appealing space. Simple, empty counters and those junk-collecting shelves will help your buyers see the home as their own. The longer we live in a house, the more “stuff” we tend to collect. Pack it up and get it out of there. There are a few common spots in your house that tend to collect that clutter, so start here:

  • Kitchen and bathroom counters

  • Fireplace mantels – less is more

  • Laundry room counters and shelves

  • Tabletops and desks

  • Magazine stacks

  • ALL CLOSETS – Buyers need to know all their own things will fit so do not leave a stuffed closet. Thin it out, donate some old clothes and make it more attractive to buyers.

2.) Clean, Like You Have Never Cleaned Before – Yes, you know you need to clean your home before a buyer comes to see it, but most people underestimate just how clean it needs to be. Think spring cleaning on steroids. Don’t forget to clean the:

  • Refrigerator

  • Ceiling fans

  • Window blinds

  • baseboards

  • Tile grout

  • Windows

  • Cabinets

3.) Create Inviting Spaces – Once again, less is more. If you have bulky furniture that doesn’t quite fit the room, downsize and possibly remove a piece. Place furniture away from the walls and make the focus about conversation, not the TV.

4.) Set an Impressive Dinner Table – This is an easy, do-it-yourself staging technique that can make a great impact. People want to envision themselves having a dinner party in the home. Use a runner and centerpiece. Get out the china or the colorful plates. Looking for inspiration? Check out Pinterest for ideas.

5.) Bring the Garden Indoors - It is summer, so flowers can be found everywhere. Put flowers in bathrooms, on the dining table, in the kitchen and on the entry table. If you run out of vases, use champagne or wine glasses and water pitchers. If you have fresh fruit or vegetables growing in the garden, place them in a bowl in the kitchen.

This is just a start of the things you can do to make buyers fall in love with your home. You only have one chance to make a first impression – don’t blow it!
